New applications for consumers that involve RFID regularly raise security as well as privacy concerns. This is because RFID tags can be read out over a distance without any interaction of the user; the user is not even aware that the tag is/was read out. A method to protect the user, is to destroy the tag and thereby its functionality at the point of sales. Hence, any additional gain for the consumer by using the already available tags is prevented by security and privacy concerns. Within the project, we want to provide a comprehensive methodology for making use of the advance of RFID tags yet ensuring privacy of all parties involved in the product life-cycle. The three workpackages of the security project cover the analysis of requirements for the tag and the cryptographic means to provide them with emphasizes on the requirements for UHF tags and tags for high data rates (WP1), the integration of advancing NFC readers in smart phones and thereby arising possibilities and challenges (WP2), as well as the secure integration in the Web of Things (WP3), enabling radically innovative applications.
